Esplanade, a new collection of bath furniture and fixtures from the renowned German firm Duravit, may have been named for the grand old boulevards of Paris, but the collection actually telegraphs a nautical sense of design. Paneled in oak veneers, which are combined with high-quality white porcelain and hand-stitched leather cabinet pulls, the various components look like actual pieces of furniture. Is it a toilet or a chair, a tub or a luxuriously deep chaise, a sink or a seaworthy trunk? The lines are smooth and elegant, vaguely referencing Art Deco but as streamlined as the most modern racing sloop. Perhaps the German-Russian designer of Esplanade, Sergei Tchoban, will have a second calling as a naval architect. Prices range from $1,750 to $10,000 per component.
