It’s not always an easy notion to fully accept but all parents must one day face the fact that their children are growing up. As kids become teenagers and begin their journey into adulthood, their tastes and needs change along with their bodies – so it’s important to provide them with the stimuli that they require where possible.
The bedroom is a case in point. The décor they delighted in as a child won’t cut the mustard any more; as soon as they feel they’re becoming more ‘grown up’, they’ll feel like they deserve to sleep in more sophisticated surroundings. Sooner or later, it’ll be time to think about updating your teenager’s room and creating some altogether more subtle style.
Remember that a teenager’s room will become a place to socialise and study as well as somewhere to sleep, so have a think about the furniture you’ll want to place in the room – and take it into account when choosing your new colour scheme.
Whatever you do, involve your son or daughter in the process or you’ll likely have a fight on your hands further down the line. While it might sound like a lovely idea to surprise your teenager with a room makeover once they return from a weekend away, if it doesn’t match what they had in their head there may well be fireworks. Alternatively, your teenager might not yet be quite ready to let go of the familiar; children mature at different rates, so it’s important to talk things through with them before making any drastic changes.
Consulting your teenager also allows delicate negotiations to take place in a calm atmosphere if you have different ideas of what the room should look like. Compromise is the watchword here; while you may not agree with painting the walls black to mark your son or daughter’s ‘dark phase’, for example, you might want to shift a little from your initial stance on some factors so that they can see you’re being reasonable.
Once you’ve agreed on a general colour scheme, creating a feature wall can be a great way to bring some contemporary style to the room. This can be achieved either by using a striking shade of paint in contrast to the rest of the room – or, alternatively, by utilising feature wallpaper to really make a bold statement.
As with any room renovation, the devil is in the details. Your lighting scheme can mean the difference between a bland room and one that positively sparkles, so give some real thought to how you choose to illuminate the area. Whichever way you choose to go with your lighting, remember that classic table lamps can be a subtle way to change the room’s lighting scheme when needed.
