This green and red Christmas wreath not only looks good, but smells good too. Cinnamon sticks, available from supermarkets and specialist food shops, have been tied onto the wreath to give it a really Christmassy scent. You could also try dried orange, lemon, cloves… and of course, branches from your Christmas tree!

For a really stunning wreath, you could use flowers instead of leaves for the base. Winter roses, carnations or anything seasonal in intense red colours look beautiful – and they bulk up a Christmas wreath very well.

Make a twig wreath from bendy twigs like birch or willow from your garden. Add berries, leaves, cones and ribbon in a bunch at the bottom to brighten it up – and cover up any ends! Or, buy the twig wreath plain (some florists and home shops sell them), and decorate it differently every year.

Start collecting conkers, pine cones or anything good looking from the garden now and you’ll have enough nearer Christmas to create your own wreath. Wind wire around the cones and attach to a ready-made, plain wreath for ease.

Take some stiff wire, thread it with baubles from your tree decoration box, then tie it into a circle. Simple and free.

A big gold ribbon gives this eucalyptus leaf wreath a rich-looking finish. If your wreath needs more gold or silver, consider spray-painting berries or pine cones a few days in advance, or using tinsel and baubles.
